Aust Glyphosate Sustainability Working Group

The Australian Glyphosate Sustainability Working Group is a collaborative initiative involving research, industry and extension representatives with the purpose of promoting the sustainable use of the herbicide glyphosate in Australian agriculture.

Priority goals
1. Increase the sustainability of glyphosate usage through the development and delivery of clear and consistent information, based on industry consensus.

2. Increase collaborations and consistency among the glyphosate research and extension activities of key research, extension and industry groups.

3. Contribute to the development of research, development and extension initiatives aimed at improving the management of glyphosate.

Glyphosate is one of the most valuable herbicides in Australian agricultural systems. The first glyphosate resistant weed population in Australia was confirmed in 1996. The need for an industry-wide initiative to promote a concerted approach to glyphosate resistance research and extension was determined at a national industry forum staged in 2003 by the Grains Research & Development Corporation. The National Glyphosate Sustainability Working Group was established as a result of this meeting and held its first meeting in October 2004. The group changed their name to the Australian Glyphosate Sustainability Working Group in 2009 to distinguish themselves from any similar groups that might form overseas as glyphosate resistance worsens in other countries.

Database of confirmed glyphosate resistant populations in Australia now available here.
